The 10 Biggest Selling Green Icons on Disc

Maybe it is easy to be green after all! To celebrate The Grinch being the highest new entry on this week’s Official Film Chart, we are revealing the biggest selling Green Icons from some of the biggest movies of all time. Official Charts have looked at the sales on disc (DVD and Blu-ray) of films starring iconic characters who just happen to be green.

One character has all the others extra green with envy, while the Top 10 Green Icons can boast combined UK sales on disc of over 30 million copies across 30 movie titles and includes stars from the Star Wars and Muppets series.

At 10, the most beautiful butterfly Heimlich from A Bug’s Life squeezes himself into the best sellers list. The Wicked Witch Of The West flies in to Number 7 in the Wizard Of Oz. The 1939 classic starring Julie Garland featured Margaret Hamilton as the terrifying Wicked Witch. A special mention goes to the Wizard himself, for being green initially (but of course turning out to be a total fraud – spoiler alert!). The iconic musical film has sold over 2 million copies on disc, despite its original release date being almost 60 years before DVD or Blu-ray came to be!

At Number 5, it’s less hate, hate, hate and more love, love, love for Jim Carrey’s 2000 version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, which was also announced to be one of the Top 10 festive films of all time by Official Charts in December.

What kind of run-down of green icons would this be without Kermit The Frog? He hops in at Number 4 with his Muppet pals on an array of Muppet movies – his biggest hit on disc being A Muppet’s Christmas Carol. Mike Wazowski steps through door Number 3 on our chart thanks to Monsters, Inc and Monsters University – the child-sized cyclops voiced by Billy Crystal is a real favourite.

Taking his throne at Number 1 is Shrek – everyone’s favourite ogre has sold more discs of his film series than any other green icon. Shrek, voiced by Mike Myers, first graced our screens in 2001 as he set off on an adventure with a magical talking donkey (Eddie Murphy) to rescue a princess (Cameron Diaz) on behalf of the ruler – and wannabe king - of a local town. The success of the film spawned a cult following, three sequels and a handful of spin-offs. The combined sales of those four films on disc make Shrek our best-seller Green Icon. Of the four instalments in the series – and all of the films counted in this chart – Shrek 2 was the biggest seller on disc.
